“Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you are saying.”
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

CALL TO WORSHIP:
From the first days of creation,
God’s presence has been in every action.

May we be open to all things through God,
recognising God in all our achievements.

In our steps together as a community,
and the steps we take where we feel alone,
may we be open to all things through God.

May we follow a path of looking forward;
not dwelling on past actions – great or small.
May we be open to all things through God,
and reveal God, in all that we do.

HYMN: Sing Your Praise to God Eternal (Tune: Hyfrydol WOV 148 ii )
Sing your praise to God eternal, sing your praise to God the Son,
sing your praise to God the Spirit, living and forever One.
God has made us, God has blessed us, God has called us to be true.
God rules over all creation, daily making all things new.

Join the praise of every creature, sing with singing birds at dawn;
when the stars shine forth at nightfall, hear their heavenly antiphon.
Praise God for the light of summer, autumn glories, winter snows,
for the coming of the springtime and the life of all that grows.

Praise God on our days of gladness for the summons to rejoice;
praise God in our times of sadness for the calm, consoling voice.
God our Maker, strong and loving, Christ our Saviour, Leader, Lord,
living God, Creator Spirit, be your holy name adored!

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree
CHILDREN’S SONG: Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
we are travellers on the road,
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear,
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you,
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love, and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too. © Scripture and Song (AA)

SERMON: God-Revealing Lives

AN AFFIRMATION
We believe in God whose creativity is not defeated
by concrete or traffic, but shines forth in the centre of our life.
We believe in Jesus Christ who lived as friend and Saviour
to the people of both city and countryside:
who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated
with everyday people like us.
We believe in the Holy Spirit who moves through the city
as truth and moments of love,
who goes between us with threads of community
and never leaves us without hope;
and, we believe in the church which is real
when it stands open to the life of the city
bearing witness to the love and justice of God.

OFFERING & THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (remain seated)
God, as we bring our offering of money, food, and ourselves, may we be mindful in the things that we say, may we be mindful in the actions we do. Help us to recognise you, through, with, and in people.
In remembering, recognising, and mindfulness, we will serve you God, through our words and our actions, in Jesus’ name…

INVITATION TO COMMUNION & THE PEACE

HYMN: I Come With Joy to Meet My Lord (Tune: Kilmarnock WOV 186)
I come with joy to meet my Lord, I come with Christians far and near
forgiven, loved, and free, to find, as all are fed,
in awe and wonder to recall the new community of love
his life laid down for me. in Christ’s communion bread.

As Christ breaks bread and bids us share
each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends.

And thus with joy we meet our Lord, Together met, together bound,
his presence, always near, we’ll go our different ways,
is in such friendship better known: and as his people in the world
we see, and praise him here. we’ll live and speak his praise.

A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
May God be with us. God is here among us.
Let us open our hearts to God. We open them to God and one another.
Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
God, we come to this table… and selfishness;

We come to this table, gifted, thankful.
We have come to offer back the gifts and skills,
you God have given each of us.
We have come to celebrate the resources of this congregation,
the opportunities for new life and service.
We come to this table… that takes away our burdens;

We have come to this table, searching.
We have come to drink from your cup of blessing,
that breaks open the promise;
that unseals the covenant; that offers its very self.
And so we come to this table with thanksgiving;
free to move out into the world; free to go where you call; free to eat the food of heaven and to share your love in Christ’s name…

PRAYER FOLLOWING COMMUNION

HYMN: For All Christ’s Friends (Sine Nomine WOV 384)
For all Christ’s friends whose lives this world have blessed,
who by their faith and actions Christ confessed,
we praise you Lord, their source of graciousness.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

You were their hope, their comfort, their delight;
you helped them grow in wisdom and in might;
in joy and pain you were their one true light.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Like them may we have Christ-like caring ways,
lives lived with wonder, tenderness and praise,
that we may live for others all our days.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

O great Communion spanning time and space,
beyond our wealth, our learning or our race,
we can be one in Jesus and his grace.
Alleluia! Alleluia! © Bill Wallace (Something to Sing About)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

GATHERING:
Worker God, whose `hands’ built the earth, moulded our bodies,
and spread the stars across the sky; we gather in your presence
with praise and thanksgiving for your creating power.

Worker God, we seek your presence in our everyday living. Strengthen our hearts and our hands to work with you, in the building of a world where the earth is valued and its people
live with justice and peace.

HYMN: Praise with Joy the World’s Creator (Tune: Praise My Soul)
Praise with joy the world’s Creator,
God of justice, love and peace,
source and end of human knowledge,
force of greatness without cease.
Celebrate the Maker’s glory,
power to rescue and release.

Praise the Son who feeds the hungry,
frees the captive, finds the lost,
heals the sick, upsets religion,
fearless both of fate and cost.
Celebrate Christ’s constant presence –
friend and stranger, guest and host.

Praise the Spirit sent among us,
liberating truth from pride,
forging bonds where race or gender,
age or nation dare divide.
Celebrate the Spirit’s treasure –
foolishness none dare deride.

Praise the Maker, Son and Spirit,
one God in community,
calling Christians to embody
oneness and diversity.
Thus the world shall yet believe,
when shown Christ’s vibrant unity. © WGRG, GIA Publications (VU)

STORY TIME

READINGS: Exodus 20:1-2, 8-11 ~ Irene Gray
Luke 13: 10-17

HYMN: Sing to Celebrate the City (Tune: Bithynia WOV 363)
Sing to celebrate the city!
Sing the lives of people there,
sing the work of skill and beauty,
all who serve and all who care.
In the dictates of the dollar,
in the systems where we live,
find the currency of kindness,
eyes to smile and hearts to give.

We who are the city’s traffic,
driving, driven, keeping pace,
name the God who makes us neighbours,
give our faith a human face;
in the workplace of God’s people,
in the high rise and the home
our agenda is for justice –
changing lives for good to come.

Celebrate the art of living!
Every colour, every sport,
every cultures dance and music,
every truth that that love has taught –
be for God within the city,
life and loving are not priced:
light the lights of joyful worship,
set the table for the Christ! © Shirley Murray (AA)

SERMON: Work is Also God’s Gift

A TIME OF QUIET

THE OFFERING: O God, we know that there are things we can do and bring and say and sing. We can faithfully carry out our daily work, we can offer our gifts with love, we can encourage and affirm others in their work, and we can sing our thanksgiving. As we present our offering for your blessing, we do so with gratitude, praying that it may be used for your purposes in our congregation, in the wider church, in our neighbourhoods and world, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN: For the Fruit of All Creation(Tune:AR HYD Y NOS- All Through the Night)
For the fruit of all creation,
thanks be to God.
For the gifts to every nation,
thanks be to God.
For the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth’s safe-keeping,
thanks be to God.

In the just reward of labour,
God’s will is done.
In the help we give our neighbour,
God’s will is done.
In our world-wide task of caring
for the thirsty and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing,
God’s will is done.

For the harvests of the Spirit,
thanks be to God.
For the good we all inherit,
thanks be to God.
For the wonders that astound us,
for the truths that still confound us,
most of all that love has found us,
thanks be to God. © Stainer & Co (CH4)
WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: God Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens
God, who stretched the spangled heavens, (Tune: Austria WOV 577)
infinite in time and place,
flung the suns in burning radiance
through the silent fields of space.
we your children, in your likeness,
share inventive powers with you:
great Creator, still creating,
show us all we yet may do.

We have ventured worlds undreamed of
since the childhood of our race;
known the ecstasy of winging
through untravelled realms of space;
probed the secrets of the atom,
yielding unimagined power,
facing us with life’s destruction
or our most triumphant hour.

As each far horizon beckons,
may it challenge us anew:
children of creative purpose,
serving others, honouring you.
May our dreams prove rich with promise,
each endeavour well begun:
great Creator, give us guidance
till our goals and yours are one. © Hope Publishing (TIS)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Here we are God, with our bits of faith and our pieces of hope.
Here we are God, in our giving and taking moods.
God, will you be here with us as we talk, dream, listen, sing, and pray?
God, will you come and join us? Will you hold and comfort,
push and prod us, speak to us, feed us?
Here we are God, in the name of Jesus the Christ.

HYMN: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (Tune: WOV 28)
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is our health and salvation.
Come, all who hear:
brothers and sisters draw near,
joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, above all things so mightily reigning,
keeping us safe at his side, and so gently sustaining.
Have you not seen
how all you needed has been
met by God’s gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper our work and defend us;
surely his goodness and mercy will daily attend us;
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
who out of love will befriend us.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
sound from God’s people again:
gladly with praise we adore him. C/A

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Alice Shanks

CHILDREN’S SONG: How is Jesus Present?
RIGHT SIDE: How is Jesus present? How is Jesus present?
How is Jesus present today?
Tell me how he’s present.
Tell me how he’s present.
Tell me how he’s present today.

LEFT SIDE: He’s present in the children, present in the family,
present in the meal that you share.
He’s present when you’re laughing,
present when you’re giving,
present when you listen and care.

R—side But I cannot see him, but I cannot see him,
but I cannot see him today.
Are you just pretending?
How can it be real?
I would like to see him today.

L- side Every time you listen, every time you’re sorry,
every time you care for a friend,
that is when he’s present,
though you do not see him,
“I am with you always”, he said.

ALL – Now I understand. Now I understand.
Let us celebrate today!
He’s present in the WORD,
present in the PEOPLE,
present in the breaking of BREAD.

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: Psalm 99 Lindsay Day
Matthew 22: 15-22 Cynthia Cross

LITANY from the Hymn, What does the Lord require
What does the Lord require
for praise and offering?
What sacrifice desire,
or tribute bid you bring?
Do justly; love mercy; walk humbly with your God.

Rulers of earth, give ear!
should you not justice show?
Will God your pleading hear,
while crime and cruelty grow?
Do justly; love mercy; walk humbly with your God.

Leaders in wealth and trade,
for whom the worker toils,
think not to win God’s aid
if greed your commerce soils.
Do justly; love mercy; walk humbly with your God.

Still down the ages ring
the prophet’s stern commands:
to merchant, worker, king
he brings God’s high demands.
Do justly; love mercy; walk humbly with your God.

SERMON: What do we see?

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life (Tune: Fulda WOV 137)
Where cross the crowded ways of life,
where sound the cries of race and clan,
above the noise of selfish strife,
we hear your words of life again.

In haunts of wretchedness and need,
on shadowed thresholds dark with fears,
from paths where hide the lures of greed,
we catch the vision of your tears.

The cup of water given for you still
holds the freshness of your grace;
yet long these multitudes to view
the sweet compassion of your face.

O Jesus, from the mountainside,
make haste to heal these hearts of pain;
among these restless throngs abide,
and tread the city’s streets again. C/A

THE OFFERING
Our money may show the face of a sovereign
and even, defender of the faith in times past;
yet it is our lives that carry your imprint, O God.
We cannot see your face, yet our hearts beat with your life.
We bring this money and this food, and all that we are, for your blessing, as we seek to show your love to all, In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: I, the Lord of Sea and Sky
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night;
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain;
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word of them.
Whom shall I send?

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame;
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts are satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send? © D. Schutte & New Dawn Music (VU)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
God, you call us to journey faithfully,
as you called the Israelite people long ago.
God, you ask us to both hear and be true to your Word,
as you have asked your people through the ages.
God, you call us to follow Jesus and serve the Gospel in your world,
In the same way Jesus called the disciples
and the early Church followers of The Way.

HYMN: Lord of All Being (WOV 626)
Lord of all being, throned afar,
thy glory flames from sun and star;
centre and light of every sphere,
yet to each loving heart how near.

Sun of our life, thy quickening ray
sheds on our path the glow of day;
star of our hope, thy softened light
cheers the long watches of the night.

Lord of all life, below, above,
whose light is truth, whose warmth is love,
before thy ever-blazing throne
we ask no lustre of our own.

Grant us thy truth to make us free,
and kindling hearts that burn for thee,
till all thy living altars claim
one holy light, one heavenly flame. C/A

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

STORY-TIME

THOUGHTS FROM THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

INTRODUCTION TO THE READING

READING: Exodus 32: 1-14 Bob Kayes

HYMN: Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free.
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters,
you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep;
and over the ages you called to each thing,
wake from your slumbers
and rise on your wings.

You swept through the desert,
you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people
with a law and a land; and when they were blinded
with their idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets
to open their eyes. © JK Manley (NJS)

REFLECTION: This golden calf thing

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: Bless Now, O God the Journey (Tune: WOV 389)
Bless now, O God, the journey that all your people make,
the path through noise and silence, the way of give and take.
The trail is found in desert and winds the mountain round,
then leads beside still waters, the road where faith is found.

Bless sojourners and pilgrims who share this winding way,
whose hope burns through the terrors, whose love sustains the day.
We yearn for holy freedom while often we are bound.
Together we are seeking the road where faith is found.

Divine Eternal Lover, you meet us on the road.
We wait for lands of promise where milk and honey flow.
But waiting not for places, you meet us all around.
Our covenant is written on roads, as faith is found. © Sylvia Dunstan (VU)

THE OFFERING: God, we do not offer money alone.
Money is a universal way of helping, but it only goes so far.
God, we do not offer our time alone.
Time is a precious commodity, but it is not enough.
God, we do not offer our talent alone.
Talent is a way of giving personal gifts, but our abilities are finite.
God, we offer money, time, and talent.
O God, this is what we offer for your blessing, that we may
use all three wisely and carefully in your service. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: O Breath of Life (WOV 322)
O Breath of life, come sweeping through us,
revive your church with life and power;
O Breath of life, come cleanse, renew us,
and fit your church to meet this hour.

O Wind of God, come bend us, break us
till humbly we confess our need;
then in your tenderness remake us,
revive, restore – for this we plead.
O Breath of love, come breathe within us,
renewing thought and will and heart;
come, love of Christ, afresh to win us,
revive your church in every part. C/A

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP (selected verses from Psalm 96):
Sing a new song to the Lord
Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Sing to the Lord, and praise Him.
Praise the Lord, all people of the earth
Proclaim His glory to the nations,
His mighty act to all peoples.

HYMN: God is Here (Tune: Blaenwern WOV 165ii)
God is here! As we his people
meet to offer praise and prayer,
may we find in fuller measure
what it is in Christ we share:
Here, as in the world around us,
all our varied skills and arts
wait the coming of His Spirit
into open minds and hearts.

Here are symbols to remind us
of our lifelong need of grace;
here are table, font and pulpit,
here the cross has central place.
Here in honesty of preaching,
here in silence, as in speech,
here in newness and renewal
God the Spirit comes to each.

Here our children find a welcome
in the Shepherd’s flock and fold;
here as bread and wine are taken,
Christ sustains us as of old.
Here the servants of the Servant
seek in worship to explore
what it means in daily living
to believe and to adore.

Lord of all, of Church and Kingdom,
in an age of change and doubt,
keep us faithful to the gospel,
help us work your purpose out.
Here, in this day’s dedication,
all we have to give, receive;
we who cannot live without you,
we adore you! We believe. © Hope Publishing (VU)

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE – Christ, light of the World.
We remember the world and its people;
A candle is lit;
We offer – love, justice, peace and hope.

SILENCE:

Please remain seated…
HYMN: I am Standing Waiting (Tune: Au Clair de la Lune)
I am standing waiting, waiting at your door,
One of hunger’s children from a billion poor;
Though you cannot see me, though I am so small –
Listen to my crying, crying for us all.

I stand at your table, asking to be fed,
Holding up my rice bowl, begging for your bread,
I stand at your schoolroom, longing just to learn,
Hoping that you’ll teach me ways to live and earn.

I stand at your clinic, begging for vaccine,
I stand at your wash place where the water’s clean,
I stand at your office, beg the Heads of State,
I am just a child, so I must hope and wait.

I stand in your churches, listen to your prayers,
Long to know a God who understands and cares.
If there is a God, a God who loves the poor,
I’m still standing waiting, waiting at your door. ©Shirley Murray (FFS)

What are the issues that concern you most about the world we live in?

INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE READINGS:
Jeremiah 1: 4-10 Fern Wakefield
Matthew 28: 16-20 Tony Beasley

REFLECTION: How does the Church engage with the world in order to transform the world in which we live?
PRAYERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE & SUNG LORD’S PRAYER

OFFERING:
Gracious God, we bring the gift of money and produce to be used in your service as a sign of love. We offer ourselves; our time, our energy and giftedness to be used in your service within our everyday lives, that we might make a difference within the world. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR COMMUNION
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:
We believe in God, the source of life who created human beings to be different and to get on with each other.
We believe in Jesus Christ, who calls us to a life which is absurd by the standards of the world.
We believe in the Spirit of God within and around us, and you and me.
We believe the times when the Church is the Church when we are a community, a source of love, laughter and the sharer of tears.
A people prepared to take risks, working together, that one day this world may be a place where people can live in justice, freedom and peace.
This is our hope, this is our faith. That we dare to believe, always and in spite of everything, in God’s power to transform.

HYMN: Now to Your Table Spread (Tune: Love Unknown WOV257i)
Now to your table spread we come, each one, in faith
that you alone provide the words of life and death:
in wine and bread, in promised food we find your loving heart, O God.

Hands of the world stretch out your mystery to touch
in longing to believe a truth beyond our reach,
to sing in joy, to cry in grief, to know your meaning for our life.

Here is our common wealth in sharing what is good
as though all humankind around one table stood,
this bread to break, this wine to taste – one people in the name of Christ. © Shirley Murray

THE INVITATION: Jesus Christ invites each one of you to his family meal. In the bread and the wine, the sign of Christ’s presence we are united in love with God, through Christ and with one another.
I come to the table in response to the invitation of Jesus Christ, who walked among us and was human like us.
I come knowing that I am freed from those things that separate me from God and one another.
I come seeking healing and wholeness through Jesus Christ who gave the gift of life for us all.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

INSTITUTION OF THE SACRAMENT

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

OFFERING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST TO ONE ANOTHER

HYMN: I am the Light of the World
“I am the light of the world.
You people come and follow me!”
If you follow and love
you’ll learn the mystery
of what you were meant to do and be.

When the song of the angel is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and the shepherds
have found their way home,
the work of Christmas is begun:
“I am the light of the world…

to find the lonely and the lost,
to heal their broken souls with love,
to feed the hungry children
with warmth and good food,
to feel the earth below, the sky above;
“I am the light of the world…

to free the prisoners from their chains,
to make the powerful care,
to re-build the nations
with strength of goodwill,
to be at one with people everywhere;
“I am the light of the world…

to bring hope to every task you do,
to dance at a baby’s new birth,
to make music in
an old man’s heart,
and sing to the colours of the earth.
“I am the light of the world… © Desert Flower Music (VU)
