Sunday 30 September Celebrating Volunteers

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
In this complex and demanding world, we recognise and honour those who give of themselves to strengthen and enhance community life.
In worship, we focus on the love of God, as it is shown in such people. We give thanks for their gift of themselves, sometimes given at great personal cost; and we hear the voice of God challenging us all with the task of making his love a tangible reality in our city.

Let us worship God.

HYMN: Praise the Lord (tune Austria: WOV58)
Praise the Lord, you heavens adore him
praise him angels in the height
sun and moon, rejoice before him,
praise him all you stars and light.
Praise the Lord for he has spoken,
worlds his mighty voice obeyed:
laws , which never shall be broken,
for their guidance he has made.

Praise the Lord, for he is glorious;
never shall his promise fail:
God has made his saints victorious;
sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation ;
host on high his power proclaim :
heaven and earth, and all creation,
laud and magnify his name.

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

STORY-TIME

SONG: One More Step Along the World I Go
One more step along the world I go,
one more step a-long the world I go,
from the old things to the new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Round the corner of the world I turn,
more and more about the world I learn;
all the new things that I see
you’ll be looking at along with me:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

As I travel through the bad and good,
keep me travelling the way I should;
where I see no way to go
you’ll be telling me the way, I know:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Give me courage when the world is rough,
keep me loving though the world is tough,
leap and sing in all I do,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

You are older than the world can be,
you are younger than the life in me,
ever old and ever new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

We hear from some of our Volunteers

HYMN: I, the Lord of Sea and Sky
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night;
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain;
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my Word to them.
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord….

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts are satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord… © Oregon Catholic Press (VU)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: Christ be our Light
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your Church gathered today.

Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has power to save us.
Make us your living voice.
Christ, be our light…

Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.
Christ, be our light…

Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.
Christ, be our light…

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
Christ, be our light… © Bernadette Farrell (CH4)
