WELCOME AND NOTICES
CALL TO WORSHIP: (adapted from Psalm 66)
Praise God, with shouts of joy, all people.
Sing about the glory of his name!
Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!
Tell the world how glorious he is.
Praise God, whose presence has been with the faithful in times past.
With the people of Israel when they escaped from Egypt,
with the immigrants and refugees coming into the land of promise.
Praise God, whose care is for each person, struggling or free.
HYMN: O Worship the King
O Worship the King all-glorious above,
O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love,
our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.
The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your power has founded of old,
has stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.
Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail.
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail;
your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! (C/A)
OPENING PRAYERS
STORY-TIME
READINGS: Jeremiah 29: 1, 4–7 Herb Madgwick
Luke 17: 11–19 Catherine Fitchett
HYMN: Who is my mother?
Who is my brother?
All those who gather round Jesus Christ:
Spirit-blown people
born from the Gospel
sit at the table, round Jesus Christ.
Differently abled,
differently labelled
widen the circle round Jesus Christ,
crutches and stigmas,
cultures’ enigmas
all come together round Jesus Christ.
Love will relate us –
colour or status
can’t segregate us round Jesus Christ:
family failings,
human derailings,
all are accepted, round Jesus Christ.
Bound by one vision,
met for one mission
we claim each other, round Jesus Christ.
Here is my mother,
here is my brother,
kindred in Spirit, round Jesus Christ. © Shirley Murray (AA)
SERMON: Jesus in the Borderlands – again!
THE OFFERING
God, we bring our gifts with thanksgiving; we bring our gifts seeking wholeness and healing – for the earth and all its creatures.
May these gifts go to work in the homes of our church community.
May these gifts go to work in our communities and in places far from here; among those we know and those whose names we will never know.
Bless these gifts, as we dedicate ourselves to the healing, reconciling work of Jesus Christ. Amen.
HYMN: Every Day I Will Offer You
Every day I will offer you,
loving God, my heart and mind,
every way I discover you
in the work your hand has signed;
help me see I’m your image, and
you have dreamed what I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!
Every day I will look to Christ,
and give thanks for wine and bread
through the pain and the emptiness
where your world cries to be fed;
help me see I can work for change,
and wherever I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!
Every day I will take your word,
answer your compassion’s claim,
celebrate every sign of hope,
every deed done in your name;
help me see you are always there,
and your light can shine through me,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy! © Shirley Murray (AA)
WE GREET ONE ANOTHER
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
JIM COTTER’S PRAYER
Eternal Spirit, Earth-Maker, Pain-Bearer, Life-Giver,
Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God, in whom is heaven.
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice and peace be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory and power that is love,
now and forever. Amen.
HYMN: All the Wonder That Surrounds Us
All the wonder that surrounds us
springs from God’s care:
all that marvels or confounds us,
raw, rich or rare;
touch and texture, sights and voices,
nature’s countless forms and choices:
all for which the heart rejoices
springs from God’s care.
Every creature, every human
lives by God’s grace:
every family, man and woman,
culture and race;
those whom fortune seems to favour,
those exploited for their labour,
those who need to know a neighbour
live by God’s grace.
God has willed that peace and justice
walk hand in hand.
These, with love, shall build foundations
on which we’ll stand:
love for lover, friend and stranger,
love defying death and danger,
love as first born in a manger –
heaven close at hand. © WGRG, The Iona Community(GIA Publications)
