Sunday July 1 2012

GATHERING: (from the rear of the church)
We gather here in your presence, God,
in our need, and bringing with us the needs of the world.
We come to you, for you come to us in Jesus,
and know by experience what human life is like.
We come with our hopes and with our fears.
We come as we are, because you invite us to come.

HYMN: 109 Tell Out My Soul

SERMON: Dare to Touch

A TIME OF QUIET

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe in God who called the world into being, who created men and women and set them free to live in love, obedience and community.
We believe in God, who because of love for his creation, entered the world in Jesus, to share our humanity: to rejoice and to despair;
to set before us the way of life and wholeness;
to be rejected, to die, but to finally conquer death.

We believe in God who invites us into the community of the church,
that through a journey of faith we may experience God’s sustaining grace; that we may fulfil our human responsibility and reach out to our neighbour; that we may work to bring healing and wholeness to an uncertain world; that we may rejoice in God’s faithfulness and in the joy of life itself.

We believe in God, who through his Spirit, is present and working in the world. We see God’s purposes in a spark of light here and there; as we watch children at play and know hope born anew in each generation…perhaps to continue to burn brightly.
For that hope we give thanks. AMEN.

THE OFFERING
In faith, we dare to venture forth. In faith, we dare to claim God’s promises. In faith, we dare to give.
God, as you have been with us on our journeys, as you have gifted us with healing beyond our dreams, as you have transformed us into new people, so we give back to you. Bless these offerings, bless our discipleship, and commission us afresh to your work in your world; in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

INVITATION TO COMMUNION AND THE PEACE

HYMN: Now To Your Table Spread
Now to your table spread we come, each one, in faith
that you alone provide the words of life and death:
in wine and bread, in promised food
we find your loving heart, O God.
Hands of the world stretch out, your mystery to touch
in longing to believe a truth beyond our reach,
to sing in joy, to cry in grief,
to know your meaning for our life.

Here is our common wealth in sharing what is good,
as though all humankind around one table stood,
this bread to break, this wine to taste –
one people in the name of Christ. © Shirley Murray (AA)

A GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
The Lord is here God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Creator God … we praise you saying:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might;
Heaven and earth are full of your glory
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in your name,
Hosanna in the highest.
Then, God, you sent yourself to us…
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body
for we all share the one bread.

ST MARTINS THEATRE GROUP: re “The Motor Camp”, now playing at Court Theatre. Madg and I have previewed this show. On this occasion we ask those interested to make their own arrangements. It is very funny, and was well received by a largely elderly audience, but the language and some content will offend many. As one critic said, it strays into the risque, rude and even obscene. We are happy to talk about the play with anyone who is concerned, and will keep in touch about further theatre options. Lyn and Madg.

FIRESIDE FUNDRAISER: Fresh Cheese Rolls for Sale. $5 per dozen or $13 for 3 dozen. Order forms are available in the foyer. Pick up Sunday 29th July. Queries to Judith 332 1577 please.

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
God is the unshakeable strength of our lives.
God is like a light shining,
lighting up every shadow and fearful place.
Let us place our hope in God, who believes in us.
May we be strong because God is behind us and before us.
Let us put our hope in God and in what he is doing among us.

HYMN: God is Here (Tune: Blaenwern WOV 165(ii) )
God is here and we his people,
meet to offer praise and prayer
May we find in fuller measure
what it is in Christ we share.
Here, as in the world around us
all our varied skills and arts;
wait the coming of the Spirit
into open minds and hearts.

Here are symbols to remind us
of our lifelong need of grace.
Here are table, font and pulpit,
here the cross has central place.
Here in honesty of preaching,
here in silence as in speech,
here in newness and renewal,
God the Spirit comes to each.

Here our children find a welcome
in the Shepherd’s flock and fold.
Here, we come and meet in oneness,
Christ sustains us as of old.
Here the servants of the Servant,
seek in worship to explore,
what it means in daily living,
to believe and to adore.

Lord of all, of Church and Kingdom,
in an age of change and doubt,
keep us faithful to the Gospel,
help us work your purpose out.
Here in this day’s dedication,
all we have to give receive.
We who cannot live without you.
We adore you! We believe.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: Take Courage and Trust (Tune: Foundation WOV 491(i))
Take courage and trust your creator and friend;
the one who has called you will guide to the end.
Remember the promise your Saviour has made;
I’ll never forsake you, when weak or afraid.

My people, I love you, I call you by name.
I am your companion through flood and through flame.
I cherish you, hold you in deepest esteem,
and help you accomplish far more than you dream.

Through deep flowing waters your pathway may cross,
but I will support you in challenge or loss.
Walk on through the fire, through the testing and strife.
My grace will sustain you, restoring your life.

The storm winds may shatter the life you have known,
yet I will be with you, for you are my own.
Great tremors may shake the foundations of earth;
through change and destruction I lead to new birth.”

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Like life itself, faith is a journey,
a pilgrimage whose purpose is a constant walk with God.
When we participate in the Sacrament of Baptism,
we recall our growth in faith,
we look again at our pilgrimage experience,
and renew our commitment to following Jesus Christ.
Let us come now to worship, in word, song and Sacrament.

OPENING PRAYERS

HYMN: Amazing Grace (chosen by Jenny & Andrew)
Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound,
that saved someone like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

As grace first taught my heart to fear,
so grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear,
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
God’s grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures. Arrangement © L F Bartlett (TIS)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Introduction

An Affirmation of Faith
We are not alone, We live in God’s world.
We believe in God: who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.
We are not alone. Thanks be to God. AMEN.
