Your Sisters Orphanage, Kisongo, Tanzania, East Africa: Your Sisters Orphanage was established in 2011 by an American woman, Libby Bailey, her partner Frank Mollel, and his Masai family.  It is divided into three parts, each complementing the other:

Creative Community Programme (CCP)This programme was implemented to provide the women of Kisongo village area a means towards economic self-sufficiency. There are about 20 women who sew together at the Orphanage and make lovely bags, aprons and children’s clothes. These items are sold in safari lodges and shops and in the USA. Some of the money goes towards running costs of the Orphanage, but most goes to the women  themselves.

Orphanage for Girls: The ‘Your Sisters’ orphanage is a sanctuary for young girls who have been orphaned or abandoned. It is their home, where they receive love, nurturing care and support in a family environment. They ensure each child receives nutritious meals and clean water, and comfortable shelter. Clothing, health care, and access to quality education are also very important provisions.

Volunteer & Travel Groups: Supporters from around the world come to visit the Orphanage, and several volunteer and travel opportunities have been developed. Volunteers can come and take part in a programme with the orphans, or the women; and combine this with a climb up Kilimanjaro or relax on the beaches of Zanzibar.

Tanzania has a population of over 40 million, and nearly 90% of Tanzanians struggle to survive on less than $1.50 a day.  To find out more about Your Sisters, speak to Barbara & Rob Meier, who have been there and will be visiting again in 2018.

St Martins has committed to support the Orphanage as part of our Mission Outreach. Donations are very welcome. Go to the website www.yoursisters.org to make a donation with your credit card.

Session Report Session met last Wednesday.

We had a creative discussion about the ‘new religion’ of Cross Fit gyms.  These are new gyms that actively promote a sense of community and personal transformation through gathering for group fitness sessions.  They promote a high degree of caring for and encouraging each other and also have a high expectation that members will tell others about the benefits of belonging.

We plan to introduce a prayer request book into the life of the congregation.  Requests for prayer may be made through the office, minister, or by filling in a request in a book that will be available at worship.  The request for prayers will be included in our corporate prayers on Sunday and available to others to include in their prayers.  Ideally the person or persons at the centre of the request should be aware of this and give their approval to use a Christian name.  Further it is helpful if those prayed for indicate specifically what they would like the congregation to pray for.

Celebrating Te Whare Roopu o Oteropo Waltham Community Cottage

We are a community of people who are bearers of hope

A hope that we might work together

in true community.

A hope that we might share the unconditional love

of Christ with people along the way

A hope that we might make a difference

in our wider community,

alleviating the struggle for some within

their daily lives.

May the life of Christ be our guide…

 About Waltham Community Cottage

“A vibrant place of hope and connection, standing tall, reaching all”

We are located at 201 Hastings St East and we offer support for vulnerable people in the community. Some of the services  we offer are: health and wellbeing support, exercise classes, free community lunch, depression support network, advocacy and crisis support. The cottage is a space which enables people to realise their potential and increase the opportunities for themselves and their families.

St Martins has supported the Cottage for many years – currently Lyndsey McKay is chair of the Trust, and Adrienne Carmichael is the Community Development Facilitator. Each week, the congregation brings along food donations for the Food Bank, and also donates presents at Christmas.

If you want to find out more, pop in and say hello. We are open Monday – Wednesday 9am – 3pm & Thursday 9am – 1pm. Go to: www.walthamcottage.com for more information or give us a call on 942 2173.

We are a community, a source of love, laughter and sharer of tears. We are a people prepared to take risks, working together,

that one day this world will be a place, where people can live in peace, justice and freedom.

This is our hope, this is our faith, that we dare to believe, always and in spite of everything, in God’s power to transform. Iona Community

Remembering
This coming Tuesday, 14th November, is the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that affected many communities on the upper east coast of the South Island.

In our Presbytery region the parishes of Amuri, Hurunui, Kaikoura and Awatere were most significantly affected. Since then Presbytery has tracked with these parishes to monitor well-being of ministers and people alike and significant grants have been made from the EQ Relief Fund to support people in their time of need.

That support is still continuing today.

We invite you to continue to uphold in prayer those affected by this natural disaster. Pray that the churches in that region can continue to bring hope and healing to those affected and also find encouragement for their own people as they face the future.

Building Progress: The inside of the church looks a little different.  The kitchen area and old office has been gutted, and the stage is gone in the church. The concrete floor has been cut and work will be done to strengthen foundations at either end of the building.

However we still do not have a consent from the council.  Issues have been raised concerning the fire report and building occupancy.  Testing has also revealed asbestos in the lino in the foyer and the soffit.
