WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

We are here to worship our heavenly Father

The love of God welcomes us

The grace of Christ awaits us

The joy of the spirit enfolds us

Don’t come as slaves, come as the truly free

Don’ come as petitioners, come as those who are already heard

Don’t come as interlopers, come as invited guests

Don’t come as outsiders, come as much wanted children

The love of God emboldens us

The grace of Christ redeems us

The joy of the spirit uplifts us

Come as the joyful, come as the eager, come as the thankful

come as the recipients of amazing grace

The love of God overflows our hearts

The grace of Christ liberates our spirits

The joy of the Spirit sings in our minds

HYMN: In Heavenly Love Abiding

In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear;

and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here:

the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid;

But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?

Wherever he may guide me no want shall turn me back,

my shepherd is beside me and nothing can I lack:

his wisdom ever waketh, his sight is never dim,

he knows the way he taketh and I will walk with him.

Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen;

bright skies will soon be o’er me where the dark clouds have been:

my hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free;

my Saviour has my treasure, and he will walk with me.

Anna Laetitia Waring (WOV504)

OPENING PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree

HYMN: I’ve got rhythm for Jesus

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

Sweet Spirit, make my life to shine with the glory of the Lord.

O Spirit, make my face to glow with the joy that I feel,

for I know that he’s real.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for him. I’ve got a rhythm for him. ©Heather Campbell

SERMON:  The mind of Christ

HYMN: Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,

till moons shall wax and wane no more.

For him shall endless prayer be made,

and praises throng to crown his head; his name like sweet perfume shall rise with every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue

dwell on his love with sweetest song; and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns:

the prisoner leaps to lose his chains: the weary find eternal rest:

And all the sons of want are blest.

Where he displays his healing power,

death and the curse are known no more;

in him the tribes of Adam boast more blessings than their father lost.

Let every creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King,

angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the long amen.                                                                          Isaac Watts (WOV136)

THE OFFERING:

Bless these gifts, O God, and bless us as we offer ourselves to serve you in different ways and to praise you in in many voices.

Send your Spirit upon us, so that when we speak the words of your love, people will hear and understand, as they did on that Pentecost day so long ago.

This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord Amen

HYMN: To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,

Who yielded his life an atonement for sin

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

And give him the glory! Great things he has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

To every believer the promise of God!

And every offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.          F J van Alstyne (WOV85)

PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE

THE LORDS PRAYER

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

HYMN: Soldiers of Christ Arise

Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on,

strong in the strength which God supplies through his eternal Son;

strong in the Lord of Hosts, and in his mighty power,

who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.

Stand then in his great might, with all his strength endued;

but take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God;

that, having all things done, and all your conflicts passed,

you may o’ercome through Christ alone, and stand entire at last.

Stand then against your foes, in close and firm array;

legions of wily fiends oppose throughout the evil day:

but meet the sons of night, and mock their vain design,

armed in the arms of heavenly light, of righteousness divine.

Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul;

take every virtue, every grace, and fortify the whole:

in him for ever joined, to battle all proceed;

but arm yourselves with all the mind that was in Christ, your Head.

Charles Wesley (WOV481)

CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN: Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise (Tune: St Denio)

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above,
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree,
and wither and perish: but nought changeth thee.

All laud we would render: O help us to see,
’tis only the splendour of light hideth thee;
and so let thy glory, Almighty, impart
through Christ in the story, thy Christ to the heart. Walter C Smith (WOV 80)
OPENING PRAYER

CHILDREN’S TALK ~ with Brent

HYMN: Ten thousand reasons  (Brent  to lead with guitar)

Chorus:          Bless the Lord, O my, O my soul

Worship His holy name.

                        Sing like never before, O my soul

 I’ll worship your holy name.

The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning

It’s time to sing your song again,

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me,

Let me be singing when the evening comes.

You’re rich in love and you’re slow to anger,

Your name is great and your heart is kind,

For all your goodness I will keep on singing,

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

And on that day when my strength is failing,

The end draws near and my time has come,

Still my soul will sing your praise unending,

Ten thousand years and then forever more.                  ©Matt Redman

SERMON

HYMN: Take My Life and Let It Be (Tune: Nottingham)

Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.

Frances R Havergal (WOV 520)

PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE: John Shanks

HYMN: Lord of the Dance (WOV 183)

I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun;
and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,
at Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be;

I am the Lord of the Dance, said he;
and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he!

I danced for the scribe and the pharisee,
but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me.
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John –
they came with me and the dance went on: Chorus…
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame:
the holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,
and they left me there on a cross to die: Chorus…
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;
it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I’d gone;
but I am the dance and I still go on: Chorus…

They cut me down and I leap up high,
I am the life that’ll never, never die;
I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me:
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He: Chorus…

NOTICES & BIRTHDAYS

We begin in darkness ~

BIBLE READING: Genesis 1:1-3 In the beginning… Lyndsey McKay

HYMN: As Earth Turns Toward Light (Tune: Hanover)

As earth turns toward light, as flowers face the sun,

from morning till night we yearn toward the One: designer and Maker of creatures and sod, of calm sea and breaker, our life giving God!

You call us to care for justice and peace, for new ways to dare to work and not cease, till there comes a dawning that ends the dark night of apathy’s yawning and sin’s gripping fright.

Unite us in prayer on this day of days, and teach us to share in un-numbered ways. Our skills, strengths, and voices no project need shirk, when each heart rejoices in worship and work.

O come and rejoice together in prayer. Praise God in one voice,

good news to declare, for Christ is victorious in conquering fear.

The future is glorious! Salvation is here!                     ©Jane Parker Huber

PRAYER:

In the stillness of the morning; as night separates from day;

dawn silently comes, bringing forth a world of awe and wonder.

A new day has begun. So we gather before you gracious God.

To give you praise and thanks.

In the stillness of the night you are there,

In the busyness of the day you break through

surprising us in so many ways.

Gracious God you have created all things.

You have created humankind and provided for us.

Gracious God we give you thanks and praise. Amen.

Darkness and light….

NATURAL LIGHT:     Sun moon and stars

Sunrise and sunset

Northern and Southern lights

STARS GIVING (an adaptation of the poem from the book Reaching for Rainbows by Ann Weems)

Humans were restless to lighten the darkness and thus created – firelight, candles, lanterns, lightbulbs…

Humans continued in their search for light to lengthen the day…….

BEHOLD Daylight Saving…

What do people do with that extra hour?

Let us create a symbol representing how people spend that one hour…

HYMN: I am the Light of the World

‘I am the light of the world. You people come and follow me!’

If you follow and love you’ll learn the mystery

of what you were meant to do and be

.

When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and the shepherds have found their way home,

the work of Christmas is begun:

to find the lonely and the lost, to heal the broken souls with love,

to feed the hungry children with warmth and good food,

to feel the earth below the sky above;

to free the prisoners from their chains, to make the powerful care,

to re-build the nations with strength of goodwill,

to be at one with people everywhere.

To bring hope to every task you do, to dance at a baby’s new birth,

to make music in an old person’s heart,

and sing to the colours of the earth.                         ©Jim Strathdee (WOV669)

Let your light shine…

Darkness and Light (an adaptation from the book The Other Side of Silence by Morton Kelsey)

BIBLE READING: Matthew 5:14-16 Let your light shine

Gwendoline Cleland

HYMN: This Little Light of Mine

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine x3

Let it shine, let it shine. Let it shine.

This light that shines is the light of love,

lights the darkness from above

It shines on me and it shines on you,

and shows what the power of love can do.

I’m gonna shine my light both far and near,

I’m gonna to shine my light both bright and clear.

Where there’s a dark corner in this land

I’m gonna to let my little light shine…                                 ©Galliard Ltd 1967

OFFERING (together): Light of all light, we come to offer the gift of money and produce to be used in your service. May our light shine where there is darkness within the world. May it be that we follow in the steps of Jesus, light of the world. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE                          Joan Scott

THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: Lord Your Almighty Word (Tune: Moscow)

Lord, your almighty word chaos and darkness heard,

and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray,

and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light.

Saviour, who came to give those who in darkness live

healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind,

O now to humankind let there be light.

Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove, speed forth your flight; move on the waters’ face, bearing the lamp of grace,

and in earth’s darkest place let there be light.

Holy and blessed Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride,

through the earth far and wide, let there be light.          John Marriott (WOV61)
