WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
God, you call us to journey faithfully,
as you called the Israelite people long ago.
God, you ask us to both hear and be true to your Word,
as you have asked your people through the ages.
God, you call us to follow Jesus and serve the Gospel in your world,
In the same way Jesus called the disciples
and the early Church followers of The Way.

HYMN: Lord of All Being (WOV 626)
Lord of all being, throned afar,
thy glory flames from sun and star;
centre and light of every sphere,
yet to each loving heart how near.

Sun of our life, thy quickening ray
sheds on our path the glow of day;
star of our hope, thy softened light
cheers the long watches of the night.

Lord of all life, below, above,
whose light is truth, whose warmth is love,
before thy ever-blazing throne
we ask no lustre of our own.

Grant us thy truth to make us free,
and kindling hearts that burn for thee,
till all thy living altars claim
one holy light, one heavenly flame. C/A

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

STORY-TIME

THOUGHTS FROM THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

INTRODUCTION TO THE READING

READING: Exodus 32: 1-14 Bob Kayes

HYMN: Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free.
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters,
you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep;
and over the ages you called to each thing,
wake from your slumbers
and rise on your wings.

You swept through the desert,
you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people
with a law and a land; and when they were blinded
with their idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets
to open their eyes. © JK Manley (NJS)

REFLECTION: This golden calf thing

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: Bless Now, O God the Journey (Tune: WOV 389)
Bless now, O God, the journey that all your people make,
the path through noise and silence, the way of give and take.
The trail is found in desert and winds the mountain round,
then leads beside still waters, the road where faith is found.

Bless sojourners and pilgrims who share this winding way,
whose hope burns through the terrors, whose love sustains the day.
We yearn for holy freedom while often we are bound.
Together we are seeking the road where faith is found.

Divine Eternal Lover, you meet us on the road.
We wait for lands of promise where milk and honey flow.
But waiting not for places, you meet us all around.
Our covenant is written on roads, as faith is found. © Sylvia Dunstan (VU)

THE OFFERING: God, we do not offer money alone.
Money is a universal way of helping, but it only goes so far.
God, we do not offer our time alone.
Time is a precious commodity, but it is not enough.
God, we do not offer our talent alone.
Talent is a way of giving personal gifts, but our abilities are finite.
God, we offer money, time, and talent.
O God, this is what we offer for your blessing, that we may
use all three wisely and carefully in your service. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: O Breath of Life (WOV 322)
O Breath of life, come sweeping through us,
revive your church with life and power;
O Breath of life, come cleanse, renew us,
and fit your church to meet this hour.

O Wind of God, come bend us, break us
till humbly we confess our need;
then in your tenderness remake us,
revive, restore – for this we plead.
O Breath of love, come breathe within us,
renewing thought and will and heart;
come, love of Christ, afresh to win us,
revive your church in every part. C/A

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP (selected verses from Psalm 96):
Sing a new song to the Lord
Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Sing to the Lord, and praise Him.
Praise the Lord, all people of the earth
Proclaim His glory to the nations,
His mighty act to all peoples.

HYMN: God is Here (Tune: Blaenwern WOV 165ii)
God is here! As we his people
meet to offer praise and prayer,
may we find in fuller measure
what it is in Christ we share:
Here, as in the world around us,
all our varied skills and arts
wait the coming of His Spirit
into open minds and hearts.

Here are symbols to remind us
of our lifelong need of grace;
here are table, font and pulpit,
here the cross has central place.
Here in honesty of preaching,
here in silence, as in speech,
here in newness and renewal
God the Spirit comes to each.

Here our children find a welcome
in the Shepherd’s flock and fold;
here as bread and wine are taken,
Christ sustains us as of old.
Here the servants of the Servant
seek in worship to explore
what it means in daily living
to believe and to adore.

Lord of all, of Church and Kingdom,
in an age of change and doubt,
keep us faithful to the gospel,
help us work your purpose out.
Here, in this day’s dedication,
all we have to give, receive;
we who cannot live without you,
we adore you! We believe. © Hope Publishing (VU)

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE – Christ, light of the World.
We remember the world and its people;
A candle is lit;
We offer – love, justice, peace and hope.

SILENCE:

Please remain seated…
HYMN: I am Standing Waiting (Tune: Au Clair de la Lune)
I am standing waiting, waiting at your door,
One of hunger’s children from a billion poor;
Though you cannot see me, though I am so small –
Listen to my crying, crying for us all.

I stand at your table, asking to be fed,
Holding up my rice bowl, begging for your bread,
I stand at your schoolroom, longing just to learn,
Hoping that you’ll teach me ways to live and earn.

I stand at your clinic, begging for vaccine,
I stand at your wash place where the water’s clean,
I stand at your office, beg the Heads of State,
I am just a child, so I must hope and wait.

I stand in your churches, listen to your prayers,
Long to know a God who understands and cares.
If there is a God, a God who loves the poor,
I’m still standing waiting, waiting at your door. ©Shirley Murray (FFS)

What are the issues that concern you most about the world we live in?

INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE READINGS:
Jeremiah 1: 4-10 Fern Wakefield
Matthew 28: 16-20 Tony Beasley

REFLECTION: How does the Church engage with the world in order to transform the world in which we live?
PRAYERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE & SUNG LORD’S PRAYER

OFFERING:
Gracious God, we bring the gift of money and produce to be used in your service as a sign of love. We offer ourselves; our time, our energy and giftedness to be used in your service within our everyday lives, that we might make a difference within the world. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR COMMUNION
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:
We believe in God, the source of life who created human beings to be different and to get on with each other.
We believe in Jesus Christ, who calls us to a life which is absurd by the standards of the world.
We believe in the Spirit of God within and around us, and you and me.
We believe the times when the Church is the Church when we are a community, a source of love, laughter and the sharer of tears.
A people prepared to take risks, working together, that one day this world may be a place where people can live in justice, freedom and peace.
This is our hope, this is our faith. That we dare to believe, always and in spite of everything, in God’s power to transform.

HYMN: Now to Your Table Spread (Tune: Love Unknown WOV257i)
Now to your table spread we come, each one, in faith
that you alone provide the words of life and death:
in wine and bread, in promised food we find your loving heart, O God.

Hands of the world stretch out your mystery to touch
in longing to believe a truth beyond our reach,
to sing in joy, to cry in grief, to know your meaning for our life.

Here is our common wealth in sharing what is good
as though all humankind around one table stood,
this bread to break, this wine to taste – one people in the name of Christ. © Shirley Murray

THE INVITATION: Jesus Christ invites each one of you to his family meal. In the bread and the wine, the sign of Christ’s presence we are united in love with God, through Christ and with one another.
I come to the table in response to the invitation of Jesus Christ, who walked among us and was human like us.
I come knowing that I am freed from those things that separate me from God and one another.
I come seeking healing and wholeness through Jesus Christ who gave the gift of life for us all.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

INSTITUTION OF THE SACRAMENT

OFFERING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST TO ONE ANOTHER

HYMN: I am the Light of the World
“I am the light of the world.
You people come and follow me!”
If you follow and love
you’ll learn the mystery
of what you were meant to do and be.

When the song of the angel is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and the shepherds
have found their way home,
the work of Christmas is begun:
“I am the light of the world…

to find the lonely and the lost,
to heal their broken souls with love,
to feed the hungry children
with warmth and good food,
to feel the earth below, the sky above;
“I am the light of the world…

to free the prisoners from their chains,
to make the powerful care,
to re-build the nations
with strength of goodwill,
to be at one with people everywhere;
“I am the light of the world…

to bring hope to every task you do,
to dance at a baby’s new birth,
to make music in
an old man’s heart,
and sing to the colours of the earth.
“I am the light of the world… © Desert Flower Music (VU)

Hymns through the Ages, Part 2

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP
Let us make music to our God; our voices sing his praises,
our hearts vibrate with love, our minds resound to his call,
our being beat in rhythm with his heart.
We will make music to our God.
Let the whole earth respond to his glory,
as the heavens acclaim him.
Let the sea and all that is in it rejoice,
and with all beings praise our Creator.
Come let us join together to make music, to exalt, glory, and rejoice in his presence.

HYMN: O For a Thousand Tongues (Tune: Lyngham)
O for a thousand tongues, to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of our God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease;
‘tis music in the sinner’s ears,
‘tis life, and health, and peace.

Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb,
your loosened tongues employ;
ye blind, behold your Saviour come;
and leap, ye lame, for joy!

My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad
the honours of your name. (Charles Wesley, 1739)

OPENING PRAYERS

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Introduction

An Affirmation of Faith (together)
We believe in God:
source of all life, source of all love
ever creating, our past and our future
father and mother of all that is to be.
We believe in God:
Christ of our history, link with eternity
one with our humanness, revealing life’s hopefulness;
traveller before us, the Sign of the Way.
We believe in God:
Spirit of newness, Spirit of power,
wisdom and wonder, mystery and miracle
moving in freedom, transforming the earth
We believe in the Church:
born amidst struggle, open to changes
centred in loving and sharing
moving and growing
heart of community turned to the world.

HYMN: Love Divine (Tune: Hyfrydol WOV 148 ii )
Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown:
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
never more thy temples leave:
thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love. (Charles Wesley 1747)

COMMENTARY ~ Beyond the Wesleys

COMMENTARY ~ Gospel Songs

HYMN: It is Well With My Soul (Horatio Spafford, 1873)
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
Refrain:It is well (it is well) with my soul, (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul.

COMMENTARY ~ The Billy Graham Crusades

HYMN: To God be the Glory (Fanny Crosby, 1875)
To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life in atonement for sin
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory! Great things he has done!

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer, and higher, and greater will be
our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.

THE OFFERING & THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

COMMENTARY ~ The 20th Century and Beyond

HYMN: Ours is a Singing Faith (Diademata WOV 163) Ours is a singing faith! Now here the hymns we raise. Resounding, strong, the years a long and echoing our praise. Ours is a singing faith! In confidence we sing: Creation’s throne is God’s alone, so joyous voices ring.
Ours is a singing faith! Through all the ebb and flow of youth and age, on history’s page we see saints come and go. Ours is a singing faith! The melody rolls on, sustained by those whose voices rose in praise in times long gone.
Ours is a singing faith! Upheld by work and prayer
that justice, peace and hope not cease but flourish everywhere.
Ours is a singing faith! Though grief or pain hold sway,
Christ still shall dwell, Emmanuel! God with us all the way.

Ours is a singing faith! All thanks to God be sung
by people here both far and near in every land and tongue.
Ours is a singing faith! Let psalms and anthems rise
from sun and moon and stars in tune till music fills the skies!

Sunday 21 September 2014 – Celebrating Community

St Martin’s Presbyterian Parish
21 September 2014
Celebrating Community

You start building a good neighbourhood when you yourself decide that you will be a good neighbour. (Robert Waldrop)

WELCOME AND NOTICES
• Session report ~ Wayne Barton

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Called as Christians to the building of community,
we come to worship as a people committed to the kind of communication that makes genuine community possible:
a sharing of the joys and hopes, the sorrows and pain,
that are part of belonging together; committed to
breaking down barriers and walls that separate people
from one another, in order to create newness of life
in the Church, and in the world around and beyond us.

HYMN: Community of Christ (Tune: Little Cornard WOV 107) Community of Christ, who make the Cross your own, live out your creed and risk your life for God alone: the God who wears your face, to whom all worlds belong, whose children are of every race and every song.

Community of Christ
look past the Church’s door
and see the refugee,
the hungry and the poor.
Take hands with the oppressed,
the jobless in your street,
take towel and water, that you wash
your neighbour’s feet.
Community of Christ,
through whom the word must sound –
cry out for justice and for peace
the whole world round:
disarm the powers that war
and all that can destroy,
turn bombs to bread,
and tears of anguish into joy.

When menace melts away,
so shall God’s will be done,
the climate of the world be peace
and Christ its Sun.
Our currency be love
and kindliness our law;
our food and faith be shared
as one forever more. © Shirley Murray (AA)

OPENING PRAYER

STORY-TIME: Old Turtle

HYMN: Christians Are All Kinds of People
Christians are all kinds of people,
they’re average, they’re short, and they’re tall;
from all kinds of backgrounds, with all kinds of outlooks,
our gracious God uses them all.
Christians are all kinds of people,
not even especially good,
But God’s love is mighty, and that is what counts,
with mercy as wide as the sea;
it reaches to you and to me.

Christians are all kinds of people,
they’re smilers, they’re grouchers, they’re clowns.
In all kinds of weather, wherever they gather,
you’ll find every kind of them round.
Christians are all kinds of people,
and sometimes all kinds are in me.
God uses all kinds of people,
the black, and the pale and the tan;
new born and the aged, the fit and disabled,
they all have a part in the plan.
God uses all kinds of people,
with problems, with hang-ups, with scars. © Stan and Pauline Stewart

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: Acts 16: 11-15 David Beaumont
Luke 8: 1-3 Lyn Steele

LITANY: Lord, can this really be?
Left: Lord, can this really be?
is this your Church, the people that I see,
who gather here and worship you with me?

Right: And must I love them all,
shoulder their loads, and answer when they call,
forgive their faults and raise them when they fall?

Left: Are these the ear, eye, hand,
your body, Lord, bound firmly in one band
and learning to keep your great command?

Right: Is this the very place,
the school of love, where we would see your face,
and through your Spirit gain enabling grace;
that all the world would see us live as one?
All: Lord, could this really be?
Lord, let it really be? from William Rutherford (adapted)

Community and Social Justice: Being a good neighbour
~ Cassie Welch

HYMN: When I Needed a Neighbour Were You There (WOV 558)
When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour, were you there?
And the creed and the colour and the name won’t matter,
Were you there?

I was hungry and thirsty, were you there, were you there?
I was hungry and thirsty, were you there?

When I needed a healer, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a healer were you there?

Wherever you travel, I’ll be there, I’ll be there,
Wherever you travel, I’ll be there.

THE OFFERING
`Our church’, we call our place of worship, but we are wrong.
The church belongs to God who loved it into existence,
watched over it from the beginning, and is already forming its future.
And yet, because of all we give, of love and loyalty, faith and work, time, money, prayers, is it not also `ours’, this church?
Not so. These also are God’s gifts to us, and so God, we give you of your own, in Jesus name. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: We are Many, We Are One
We are many, we are one, and the work of Christ is done when we learn to live in true community, as the stars that fill the night, as a flock of birds in flight, as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine; as the branches of a tree, as the waves upon the sea, as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine.

All division is made whole
when we honour every soul,
find the life of God in every you and me,
as the fingers of a hand,
as the grains that form the sand,
as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine;
as the threads upon a loom,
as a field of flowers in bloom,
as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine.

We will join creation’s song,
make a world where all belong,
build as one in peace and loving harmony,
as the voices of a choir,
as the flames within a fire,
as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine;
as the snowflakes in the snow,
as the colours of a bow,
as the cluster of the grapes upon the vine. © Colin Gibson (FFS)

Celebrating Hospital Ministries

The world is full of suffering. It is also full of the overcoming of it.
Helen Keller (1880-1968)
GATHERING:
This first day of the week we come to enjoy the love God has for us.
We come celebrating God’s love.
This first day of the week we come to enjoy the love we have for one another. We come celebrating the love we both receive and give.
This first day of the week we come bringing with us a spirit of thankfulness. In wonder and in joy we worship God.

HYMN: God Whose Love is Everywhere God whose love is everywhere made our earth and all things fair, ever keeps them in his care; praise the God of love! He who hung the stars in space holds the spinning world in place; praise the God of love!

Come with thankfulness to sing
of the gifts the seasons bring,
summer, winter, autumn, spring;
praise the God of love!
He who gave us breath and birth
gives us all the fruitful earth;
praise the God of love!

See the sign of love appear,
flame of glory, bright and clear,
light for all the world is here;
praise the God of love!
Gloom and darkness, get you gone!
Christ the Light of life has shone;
praise the God of love! © Hope Publishing (HFTC)

Radio Lollipop ~ Wayne Barton

HYMN: That Christ May Be Known
Let all who would serve him, renew and revive
their faith in Christ Jesus, so it can be shown
to all the world’s people – his love is alive,
and this is our challenge, for Christ should be known.
Tell it out, tell it out,
with His love in our voice,
spread his word, spread his word,
let us all now rejoice.
We’ll tell of the good news in country and town,
proclaiming this message, until Christ is known.

Begin with us now, Lord, to plan and prepare
our lives for your service, both here and at home;
we pray that your Spirit will help us to share
our worship together, that Christ may be known.

O let me respond, Lord, to your stirring call,
discover the talents which are mine alone.
Please strengthen and help me bring your word to all
in faith and involvement, for Christ must be known.

Let us share in your vision to change the whole world,
we’ll all spread the message and pray seeds are sown;
a great celebration, our love for you held,
forgiveness and new life – AND CHRIST WILL BE KNOWN.
(June Service)

1 CORINTHIANS 13 FOR CHAPLAINS

HYMN: Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
we are travellers on the road,
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear,
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you,
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love, and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.
