CALL TO WORSHIP:
In different times and situations God calls us to encounter
different experiences of his Word:
Right: Sometimes comfort in our grief or despair,
Left: Sometimes challenge in our complacency,
Right: Sometimes assurance of our worth
when life has left us bruised and vulnerable,
Left: Sometimes blunt reassessment of ourselves
when we have lost our vision.
All: But always God calls us to take stock of the many blessings
we have gained in life; to see ourselves realistically against
the backdrop of a world in need, and to care about others for whom Jesus had compassion and concern – and to take action.
HYMN: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all, life thou givest – to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree,
then wither and perish – but naught changeth thee.
Thou reignest, in glory, though rulest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render: O help us to see
‘tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. C/A
OPENING PRAYERS
TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Wayne Barton
SONG: Sent By the Lord Am I
Sent by the Lord am I;
my hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
Sent by the Lord am I;
my hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
The angels cannot change
a world of hurt and pain
into a world of love,
of justice and of peace.
The task is mine to do,
to set it really free.
Oh, help me to obey;
help me to do your will. © Iona Community (CH 4)
INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS
READINGS: 1 Timothy 6: 6–19 Elizabeth Penwell
Luke 16: 19-31 Warren Pettigrew
SERMON
A TIME OF QUIET
THE OFFERING & BLESSING OF THE SHOE BOXES
Compassionate and gracious God, we who have received your gifts
pray you will bless this offering, given in response to your generosity.
May these gifts nurture the ministries of your church and foster goodwill among all people…
HYMN: Christ be our Light
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your Church gathered today.
Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed…
Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone…
Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come. © Bernadette Farrell (CH4)
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN: I Am the Light of the World
I am the light of the world.
You people come and follow me!
If you follow and love
you’ll learn the mystery
of what you were meant to do and be.
When the song of the angel is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and the shepherds
have found their way home,
the work of Christmas is begun:
To find the lonely and the lost,
to heal their broken souls with love,
to feed the hungry children
with warmth and good food,
to feel the earth below, the sky above;
To free the prisoners from all chains,
to make the powerful care,
to re-build the nations
with strength of goodwill,
to be at one with people everywhere;
To bring hope to every task you do,
to dance at a baby’s new birth,
to make music in
an old man’s heart,
and sing to the colours of the earth. © Desert Flower Music (WOV669)
