Save the date: Movie night “Brassed Off” Saturday 29th April 5.15pm. “Funny, moving and heart warming” – for Danny it is music that embodies the spirit of the mining community in which he lives. But as the closure of the mines looms large on the horizon, not all the members of the Colliery Brass Band can share his passion. However, attitudes change with the arrival of the gorgeous Gloria and a new wave of enthusiasm sweeps through the band. Gloria’s former classmate Andy is particularly smitten as the band embarks on the battle for the National Championships. Conflicts soon begin to surface between friends, family, colleagues and lovers. Yet a defiant spirit is re-awoken in the band, leading them on a triumphant journey that will tell their story to the nation.

Pastoral letter from the Moderator:

A couple of weeks ago I wrote to you and asked that you hold in your hearts those in the North Island impacted by flooding and the devastating Cyclone Gabrielle, which particularly affected the East Coast.

Please continue to remember those who have lost lives, family and friends, homes and livelihoods. Continue to pray for strength and resilience for the people and churches and church leaders in the most impacted areas; they are being called upon to give so much, often while contending with their own difficult situations.

When I wrote previously, we were in the process of contacting our presbyteries and reaching out to affected parishes. They continue to face very difficult and challenging circumstances. And a few of our parishes remain isolated.

So that we can share information as we receive it, we have created a PCANZ Cyclone and Floods updates page on the Church website. I encourage you to read there what our parishes and presbyteries are sharing on how they are working with their communities, what help they might need, and which relief funds they support.

You will see that our churches have responded amazingly well given the conditions and limitations they are under. Some are better resourced than others, yet all are responding as much as they can, in ways that they can. And warmth and hospitality are to the fore.

Mangapapa Union Church are dealing with terrible flood conditions, their foodbank has been overwhelmed with requests for assistance, yet they persevere overcoming numerous obstacles to make deliveries to isolated homes.

Wairoa Union Parish also face terrible flood conditions in an isolated community. Their halls have sheltered rest home residents and a play centre. They are supporting many in their community who have no insurance.

St John’s Presbyterian Church in Hastings is currently without a minister but continue their commitment to their community care ministry; buying groceries and cooking them to provide frozen meals to those in the community who need them most.

St Columba’s Presbyterian Church in Taradale continues to provide a warm welcoming space to talk and have a free cup of tea and coffee. Those without power can cook their food at the church, and they have also provided free meat and hot meals including dietary options.

St Columba’s Church, Havelock North have also provided a warm welcoming space, a place to talk, and for those without power a place to charge devices. They gathered blankets, clothing and other necessities on behalf of Civil Defence who distributed the goods within the first few days of the cyclone. Over the coming weeks, the church is donating to the Hawkes Bay Cyclone Relief Fund. The  church will host a performance by Lindisfarne College, Hastings, on Thursday 16 March, 12.30-1.20pm. If you can attend, please go. It will be koha only with proceeds to Cyclone Relief Fund.

On the topic of our Church Schools, we have seen an excellent fundraising initiative from St Andrew’s College, Christchurch. They fundraised $34,000 for those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, with funds going to the New Zealand Red Cross Disaster Fund. Additionally, a $1,000 was given at their Middle School Chapel Service for St Andrew’s Church, Hastings (who are going from strength to strength with their GenLend initiative).

As we receive further news from our parishes and presbyteries, we will update the Church website page https://www.presbyterian.org.nz/about-us/contact-us/pcanz-floods-cyclone-gabrielle. Keep checking it and keep in your thoughts and prayers all those on the hard road to recovery.

Yours in Christ

Message from the Moderator: Neighbours Aotearoa March 2023

I love our Church theme for Neighbours month this year, Let’s Share… Kai with our Communities. This is deeply Christian, this idea of sharing food and around a table.

The Australian theologian and missiologist Mike Frost once commented that Christianity captured the Roman Empire not by sword but by table! What a wonderful thing to be captured by, the hubbub of neighbours sharing food together. This vision for hospitality, of reaching out inviting and including, is even more urgently needed in our communities following the shocking destruction of the recent floods and cyclone.

I encourage you to see our Church website resources for parishes. These include an offer for our churches to enter a draw for supermarket gift cards, download a poster, get advice on how to set up a pataka kai, and see examples of how our churches are sharing food and meals with their communities. I hope you are inspired and encouraged to find your own way to share kai with community this year.

Nga mihi nui

Moderator’s Lent message

Sorely Tested

Jesus was sorely tested through 40 days of mounting pressure brought on by hunger, thirst, and demonic taunting. We too, in these last few years, have experienced the cumulative impact of one test after another. Add up the global financial crisis, Christchurch earthquakes, mosque attack, COVID pandemic, housing crisis, war in Ukraine, impending recession, flooding and now Cyclone Gabrielle, and feel the toll it has taken on us.

How are you feeling this Lenten season?

All that has happened in recent years, and is happening now, leaves me feeling weary and wondering what will be next. It makes me feel sorely tested, in a nation that has been sorely tested. It causes me to wonder about where we put our trust and what will sustain us in this time of repeated trial.

Jesus was sustained by the leading and comforting presence of the Holy Spirit in his time of testing.

Jesus put his trust in scripture to anchor him at a time when it was easy to lose perspective. And then, when the rush of testing began to subside, there were angels who helped pick up the pieces! And haven’t we seen our share of angels personified in the aftermath of the latest crisis, Cyclone Gabrielle.

I witnessed this phenomenon in Christchurch after the earthquakes and mosque attack. Lovely acts of ‘random’ kindness from complete strangers. And we see it again and again in the aftermath of this latest storm, these angels in disguise.

We find ourselves as churches incarnated in our communities, bearers of the Spirit, guided by the scriptures and with our fair share of angelic readiness for action. In this way we can take a leaf out of the Lenten story of Jesus in a nation hungering for hope!

From the Parish Council meeting:

  • The meeting was chaired by our Interim Moderator – Reverend Dan Yeazel.
  • Rev Stephanie Wells, Convenor of our current MSB was also present. She gave an update as to ‘where we were at’. Despite the Congregation approving the Parish Profile recently, and the fact that those Minutes had been confirmed at the Parish Council meeting in December, Presbytery had objected to how it was recorded. Because there were problems in communication and recording during the previous MSB’s tenure, Presbytery appear to be ‘dotting I’s and crossing t’s’ very carefully. Therefore the Parish Profile – along with the Terms of Call and Skill Sets was moved and seconded again. This delay has meant that advertising for a new Minister has not happened, although Stephanie has spoken to several ‘prospective’ candidates. Stephanie was thanked for her report and also her dedication to her role as Convenor.
  • The preaching roster of Ministers who will take services at St Martins has been filled through until the end of May. Special thanks to Allison Blackler and the Worship team for their work in this regard.
  • To help rectify current problems associated with ‘Zoom’ it was agreed to purchase a new camera.
  • Special thanks to Colin Wilmshurst for all the extra work and time he has given sorting some of the technical issues.
  • MENZ Shed is booming and there is a possibility that it will be open 4 days a week.
  • Hilary Moore, as St Martins Presbyterian Child Protection Officer, will attend a training on Saturday (18/2) with regard to children in church, their safety and wellbeing.
  • We are looking to close our Facebook page and bring up to date the current Web site.
  • Consideration that St Martins become an A Rocha church. https://www.ecochurch.org.nz/

A Lenten Challenge…

The forty days of Lent begin this week with the celebration of Ash Wednesday.  In todays service a challenge was issued  to listen more attentively to Jesus in our lives as Christians.  During Lent you are invited to:

  1. Read the Beatitudes in Matthew 5-7 – a core summary of Jesus’ teaching
  2. Ask more often WWJD – What Would Jesus Do?  – talk about this with others and be bold in your actions
  3. Ask each day, “where did I meet Jesus?”  or “where did I feel most alive?”  Jesus came to bring life so when we encounter the presence of Jesus (in others, or within ourselves we will feel more alive)
