Sunday 3 November 2013

CALL TO WORSHIP:
In each new day that dawns, each new week,
or month, or year,
God still believes in us, still holds out new possibilities.
God calls us constantly to begin again
in living out the destiny that is ours,
in being truly a people of covenant,
participants and co-workers in shaping a world that reflects
God’s love for humanity, for the earth and all its creatures.

HYMN: God Whose Love is Everywhere
God whose love is everywhere
made our earth and all things fair,
ever keeps them in his care;
praise the God of love!
He who hung the stars in space
holds the spinning world in place;
praise the God of love!

Come with thankfulness to sing
of the gifts the seasons bring,
summer, winter, autumn, spring;
praise the God of love!
He who gave us breath and birth
gives us all the fruitful earth;
praise the God of love!

See the sign of love appear,
flame of glory, bright and clear,
light for all the world is here;
praise the God of love!
Gloom and darkness, get you gone!
Christ the Light of life has shone;
praise the God of love! © Hope Publishing (HFTC)

A TIME OF SILENCE

HYMN: There’s a Wideness in God’s mercy
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea;
there’s a kindness in God’s justice which is more than liberty.
There’s no place where human sorrows are more deeply felt than heav’n.
There’s no place where human failings have such kindly judgements giv’n.

For the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind
and the heart of the eternal is most wonderfully kind.
But we make that love to narrow by the limits of our own;
and we magnify God’s strictness with a zeal love will not own.

There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this;
there is room for fresh creations in that end- less world of bliss.
If our love were but more simple we would trust the living Word;
and our lives would fill with gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.
(Words: Frederick Faber , alt Colin Gibson)

THE OFFERING
We give ourselves and these gifts with enthusiasm
because our spirits seek what is truly real.
In love, in faith, in community, you reveal to us a new way of belonging,
of being, of becoming. Bless us and those around us in all these ways. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR OTHERS

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe in God whose creativity is not defeated
by concrete or traffic, but shines forth in the centre of our life.
We believe in Jesus Christ who lived as friend and Saviour
to the people of both city and countryside:
who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated
with ordinary people like us.
We believe in the Holy Spirit who moves through the city
as truth and moments of love,
who goes between us with threads of community
and never leaves us without hope.
And we believe in the church which is real
when it stands open to the life of the city
and bears witness to the love and justice of God. AMEN.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION & THE PEACE

A GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
May God be with us. God is here among us.
Let us open our hearts to God.
We open them to God and to one another.
Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

God, we come to this table … prejudice and selfishness;
We come to this table, gifted, thankful. We have come to offer back the gifts and skills, you have given each of us.
We have come to celebrate the resources of this congregation,
the opportunities for new life and service.

We come to this table … that takes away our burdens;
We have come to this table, searching.
We have come to drink from your cup of blessing,
that breaks open the promise; that unseals the covenant;
that offers its very self.
And so we come to this table with thanksgiving;
free to move out into the world; free to go where you call and to share your love in Christ’s name …

COMMUNION

PRAYER FOLLOWING COMMUNION

HYMN: Sent Forth by God’s Blessing
Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the people of God from this dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended, O now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.
The seed of Christ’s teaching, receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
God’s grace did invite us, God’s love shall unite us
to work for the kingdom and answer its call.

With praise and thanksgiving to God ever living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
embracing God’s children of each tribe and race.
With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;
unite us one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving
give honour to Christ and the name that we bear.

Sunday 27 October

Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands – O prosper the work of our hands! (Ps 90: 16-17)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
God, who calls us to find meaningful work for our hands and our lives,
calls us also to see work in its proper perspective,
as a necessary and important part of life,
but not as a measure of life’s worth.

As we seek God’s Spirit moving among and within us,
may we hear the call to relationship ~
both with God and other people, as the real measure of life;
and may we be given insight to respond to that call
with all of our creative powers.

HYMN: God Who Gives to Life (Tune: Blaenwern WOV 165ii)
God who gives to life its goodness,
God creator of all joy,
God who gives to us our freedom,
God who blesses tool and toy:
teach us now to laugh and praise you,
deep within, your praises sing
till the whole creation dances
for the goodness of its king.

God who fills the earth with beauty,
God who binds each friend to friend,
God who names us co-creators
God who wills that chaos end:
grant us now creative spirits,
minds responsive to your mind,
hearts and wills your reign extending
all our acts by love refined. © W. Farquharson (VU)

OPENING PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Learn Come and Find the Quiet Centre

STORY-TIME

READINGS: Exodus 20:1-2, 8-11 Anneke Howie
Responsive Reading – From a paraphrase of Psalm 90 (on the screen)
Mark 2: 23-28 Jeannette Beaumont

SONG: Come and Find the Quiet Centre
Come and find the quiet centre
in the crowded life we lead,
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes, that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.

Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
knows our being, touches base,
making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
raising courage when we’re shrinking,
finding scope for faith begun.

In the Spirit let us travel,
open to each other’s pain,
let our lives and fears unravel,
celebrate the space we gain:
there’s a place for deepest dreaming,
there’s a time for heart to care,
in the Spirit’s lively scheming
there is always room to spare! © Shirley Murray (FFS)

SERMON: Our calling and our work

THE OFFERING
We trust O God that there are things we can do and bring and say and sing. We can sing for joy, we can say a prayer, we can bring our love and we can do our share. As we present our offering today we do so with hearts of thanksgiving, that it may be used for your purposes in our congregation, in the wider church, and in our neighbourhoods and world. We ask your blessing upon us and these gifts we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

HYMN: Sing to Celebrate the City (Tune: Bithynia WOV 363)
Sing to celebrate the city!
Sing the lives of people there,
sing the work of skill and beauty,
all who serve and all who care.
In the dictates of the dollar,
in the systems where we live,
find the currency of kindness,
eyes to smile and hearts to give.

We who are the city’s traffic,
driving, driven, keeping pace,
name the God who makes us neighbours,
give our faith a human face;
in the workplace of God’s people,
in the highrise and the home
our agenda is for justice –
changing lives for good to come.

Celebrate the art of living!
Every colour, every sport,
every cultures dance and music,
every truth that that love has taught –
be for God within the city,
life and loving are not priced:
light the lights of joyful worship,
set the table for the Christ! © Shirley Murray (AA)

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: There’s a Spirit in the Air (Tune: Lauds)
There’s a Spirit in the air,
telling Christians everywhere:
“Praise the love that Christ revealed,
living, working in our world.”

Lose your shyness, find your tongue
tell the world what God has done:
God in Christ has come to stay.
Live tomorrow’s life today!

When believers break the bread,
when a hungry child is fed,
praise the love that Christ revealed,
living, working in our world.

Still the Spirit gives us light,
seeing wrong and setting right:
God in Christ has come to stay.
Live tomorrow’s life today!

When a stranger’s not alone,
where the homeless find a home,
praise the love that Christ revealed,
living, working in our world. © Brian Wren (VU)

THE BLESSING

Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to another.
Before the mountains were brought forth, or the earth and the world were made: you are God, from age to age everlasting.
Teach us to know how few are our days: that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Satisfy us in the morning with your constant love: so that we may rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
Show your servants your work: and let their children see your glory.
May your favour O Lord our God be upon us: and prosper the work of our hands, O prosper the work of our hands.

HYMN: Lord of All Hopefulness (Tune: Slane (2) WOV 557)
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares can destroy,

be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
be there at our labours, and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Sunday 20 October 2013

This morning we welcome Cassie Welch ~ Community Development Worker ~ who is working with small Focus Groups in parishes, including us.
WELCOME AND NOTICES
GATHERING: adapted from John Weir
Who is moving through the silence, gentle as the summer rain?
Who is beckoning from the doorway, asking us to come on out?
God, we see your presence in the eyes of those who love, in the actions of those who care;
in the streets of little towns, in the shadows of the city,
where we gather in your name.

HYMN: God of History – Recent, Ancient (Tune: Hyfrydol) God of history – recent, ancient –
God of every yesterday,
still our God in this day’s moments,
where we go and where we stay:
You have set us in this context,
time, relationship, and place,
hear our praise and glad thanksgiving
for all signs of present grace.

You have called us from division
into unity and hope.
Each and all belong together
in the world’s kaleidoscope.
Help us listen to the voices
daring us to be and do
what you plan for church and people,
loving others, praising you.

How are we, then, called to answer
as we work and as we live,
called to justice, called to mission,
learning to receive and give?
Shall we build a bridge of promise?
Tear down walls that split, divide?
Fling wide doorways, open windows?
Let the Spirit come inside?

God, you point us toward the future
where Christ leads and shows the way.
Here and now, work not yet finished
needs our strength and will today.
Thus we move into tomorrow,
called to live and work and be
reconcilers, pilgrim people,
called by Christ, by Christ set free. © JP Huber (ASF)

OPENING PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

SONG: The Church is Wherever God’s People
The church is wherever God’s people are singing
sharing good news with a song and a voice.
The church is where we as Christ’s followers are telling
our stories of faith and our message, rejoice!

The church is wherever God’s people are laughing,
finding God’s blessing in every new face.
The church is now moving in different directions,
with Christ as our guide in a trail filled with grace.

The church is not found in one place or one building,
frozen in memories from long, long ago.
The church is exploring adventures of living
that free us to follow new paths God will show.

A CONVERSATION WITH CASSIE

THE OFFERING
God, as we come to ask your blessing on these gifts of money and food, we are conscious of what you have given us: the gift of life and love, support for each day and guidance for living, opportunities for service and examples of caring.
We respond to your generosity when we share your goodness with others. We respond to your generosity when we share our lives with others. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: Putting People First
Speaking up for those who cannot speak,
reaching out to the poor and the weak,
changing systems that prison the mind,
bringing hope and liberty;
putting people,
putting people,
putting people first for a change.

Standing tall with those who stand alone,
in solidarity;
it is the work of Jesus Christ,
it is the work for me.

Working hard for change, not charity,
making the blind ones see;
it is the work of Jesus Christ,
it is the work for me.

Letting go that others may enjoy,
teaching true community:
It is the work of Jesus Christ,
it is the work for me. © Colin Gibson (for 50th Anniversary of CWS)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP: (adapted from Psalm 66)
Praise God, with shouts of joy, all people.
Sing about the glory of his name!
Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!
Tell the world how glorious he is.
Praise God, whose presence has been with the faithful in times past.
With the people of Israel when they escaped from Egypt,
with the immigrants and refugees coming into the land of promise.
Praise God, whose care is for each person, struggling or free.

HYMN: O Worship the King
O Worship the King all-glorious above,
O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love,
our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your power has founded of old,
has stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail.
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail;
your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! (C/A)

Differently abled,
differently labelled
widen the circle round Jesus Christ,
crutches and stigmas,
cultures’ enigmas
all come together round Jesus Christ.

Love will relate us –
colour or status
can’t segregate us round Jesus Christ:
family failings,
human derailings,
all are accepted, round Jesus Christ.

Bound by one vision,
met for one mission
we claim each other, round Jesus Christ.
Here is my mother,
here is my brother,
kindred in Spirit, round Jesus Christ. © Shirley Murray (AA)

SERMON: Jesus in the Borderlands – again!

THE OFFERING
God, we bring our gifts with thanksgiving; we bring our gifts seeking wholeness and healing – for the earth and all its creatures.
May these gifts go to work in the homes of our church community.
May these gifts go to work in our communities and in places far from here; among those we know and those whose names we will never know.
Bless these gifts, as we dedicate ourselves to the healing, reconciling work of Jesus Christ. Amen.

HYMN: Every Day I Will Offer You
Every day I will offer you,
loving God, my heart and mind,
every way I discover you
in the work your hand has signed;
help me see I’m your image, and
you have dreamed what I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will look to Christ,
and give thanks for wine and bread
through the pain and the emptiness
where your world cries to be fed;
help me see I can work for change,
and wherever I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will take your word,
answer your compassion’s claim,
celebrate every sign of hope,
every deed done in your name;
help me see you are always there,
and your light can shine through me,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy! © Shirley Murray (AA)

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

JIM COTTER’S PRAYER
Eternal Spirit, Earth-Maker, Pain-Bearer, Life-Giver,
Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God, in whom is heaven.
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice and peace be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory and power that is love,
now and forever. Amen.

HYMN: All the Wonder That Surrounds Us
All the wonder that surrounds us
springs from God’s care:
all that marvels or confounds us,
raw, rich or rare;
touch and texture, sights and voices,
nature’s countless forms and choices:
all for which the heart rejoices
springs from God’s care.

Every creature, every human
lives by God’s grace:
every family, man and woman,
culture and race;
those whom fortune seems to favour,
those exploited for their labour,
those who need to know a neighbour
live by God’s grace.

God has willed that peace and justice
walk hand in hand.
These, with love, shall build foundations
on which we’ll stand:
love for lover, friend and stranger,
love defying death and danger,
love as first born in a manger –
heaven close at hand. © WGRG, The Iona Community(GIA Publications)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
The call of God does not come to superhuman beings,
but to people like ourselves;
to those who hear the call and respond with all of themselves;
often to find that the task makes of them
more than they have ever been before.
This is our call as followers of Jesus Christ:
not to easy tasks within our grasp, but to the tasks at hand,
in which God promises to be with us,
enabling us to meet exciting and formidable challenges.
May we be open to that call.

HYMN: O God, Whom We Praise (Tune: Hanover WOV 67)
O God, whom we praise from morning till night,
your grace fills our days as lustrous as light.
In joy or in sorrow we call on your name,
today and tomorrow, as always the same.

We know without you our living is vain.
You give us a view of life that’s humane,
of growing and learning that never should cease,
of working and yearning for justice and peace.

Our knowledge is frail. Your wisdom is pure.
Our scheming may fail. Your actions are sure.
Our striving can never our full hopes attain,
your truth lasts forever, eternal your reign.

Now fit us for life in this time and place.
Calm all fear and strife and grant us the grace
to stand with our Saviour, proclaiming to all,
by faith and behaviour, response to your call. © JP Huber (ASF)

C READING: Footprints Marilyn Tait

HYMN: In the Quiet Curve of Evening
In the quiet curve of evening,
in the sinking of the days,
in the silky void of darkness, you are there.
In the lapses of my breathing,
in the space between my ways,
in the crater carved by sadness, you are there.
You are there, you are there, you are there.

In the rests between the phrases,
in the cracks between the stars,
in the gaps between the meaning, you are there.
In the melting down of endings,
in the cooling of the sun,
in the solstice of the winter, you are there.
You are there, you are there, you are there.

In the mystery of my hungers,
in the silence of my rooms,
in the cloud of my unknowing, you are there.
In the empty cave of grieving,
in the desert of my dreams,
in the tunnel of my sorrow, you are there.
You are there, you are there, you are there. © Order of St Benedict (VU)

FAITH AND LIFE ~ with Bill Lloyd

HYMN: O Jesus I Have Promised ~ Bill’s choice
O Jesus, I have promised
to serve you to the end;
Lord, be for ever near me,
my Saviour and my friend:
I shall not fear the journey
if you are by my side,
nor wander from the pathway
if you will be my guide.

O let me feel you near me:
the world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
the tempting sounds I hear;
my foes are ever near me,
around me and within;
but, Jesus, draw me nearer,
and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear you speaking
in accents clear and still,
above the storms of passion,
the murmurs of self-will;
Lord, speak to reassure me,
to chasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen,
true guardian of my soul.

Lord, let me see your footmarks,
and in them plant my own;
that I may follow boldly
and in your strength alone;
O guide me, call me, draw me,
uphold me to the end;
now give me grace to follow,
my Saviour and my friend. C/A

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You ~ Bill’s choice
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
we are travellers on the road,
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear,
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you,
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love, and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too. © Scripture in Song (CH 4)
