WELCOME AND NOTICES
• Session Report (Wayne Barton)

CALL TO WORSHIP:
In different times and situations God calls us to encounter
different experiences of his Word:
Right: Sometimes comfort in our grief or despair,
Left: Sometimes challenge in our complacency,
Right: Sometimes assurance of our worth
when life has left us bruised and vulnerable,
Left: Sometimes blunt reassessment of ourselves
when we have lost our vision.
All: But always God calls us to take stock of the many blessings
we have gained in life; to see ourselves realistically against
the backdrop of a world in need, and to care about others for whom Jesus had compassion and concern – and to take action.

HYMN: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest – to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree,
then wither and perish – but naught changeth thee.

Thou reignest, in glory, though rulest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render: O help us to see
‘tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. C/A
OPENING PRAYERS

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Wayne Barton

SONG: Sent By the Lord Am I
Sent by the Lord am I;
my hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
Sent by the Lord am I;
my hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.

The angels cannot change
a world of hurt and pain
into a world of love,
of justice and of peace.
The task is mine to do,
to set it really free.
Oh, help me to obey;
help me to do your will. © Iona Community (CH 4)

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: 1 Timothy 6: 6–19 Elizabeth Penwell
Luke 16: 19-31 Warren Pettigrew
SERMON

A TIME OF QUIET

THE OFFERING & BLESSING OF THE SHOE BOXES
Compassionate and gracious God, we who have received your gifts
pray you will bless this offering, given in response to your generosity.
May these gifts nurture the ministries of your church and foster goodwill among all people…

HYMN: Christ be our Light
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.

Christ, be our light!
Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your Church gathered today.

Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed…

Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone…

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come. © Bernadette Farrell (CH4)

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: I Am the Light of the World
I am the light of the world.
You people come and follow me!
If you follow and love
you’ll learn the mystery
of what you were meant to do and be.

When the song of the angel is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and the shepherds
have found their way home,
the work of Christmas is begun:

To find the lonely and the lost,
to heal their broken souls with love,
to feed the hungry children
with warmth and good food,
to feel the earth below, the sky above;

To free the prisoners from all chains,
to make the powerful care,
to re-build the nations
with strength of goodwill,
to be at one with people everywhere;

To bring hope to every task you do,
to dance at a baby’s new birth,
to make music in
an old man’s heart,
and sing to the colours of the earth. © Desert Flower Music (WOV669)

CALL TO WORSHIP:
This is the place and this is the time.
Here and now God waits to break into our experience.
To change our minds, to change our lives, to change our ways.

To make us see the world and the whole of life in a new light.
To fill us with hope, joy and certainty for the future.

This is the place as are all places. This is the time as are all times.

O God of this place and every place. God of this time and all time,
Here and now we praise you.

HYMN: Joyful, Joyful We Adore You (Tune: “Hymn to Joy” WOV 92)
Joyful, joyful we adore you,
God of glory, Lord of love.
Hearts unfold like flowers before you,
opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of tears and sadness,
drive the mists of doubt away.
Giver of abounding gladness,
fill us with the light of day!

All your works with joy surround you,
Earth and heaven reflect your rays.
Stars and planets sing around you,
Centre of unbroken praise:
Field and forest, plain and mountain,
flower filled garden, gleaming dew,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain,
Call us to rejoice in you!

People join the mighty chorus
which the love of Christ began.
God our life is stirring in us,
Christ-like love binds us as one.
Ever singing we go forward
servants of the risen Christ.
Joyful music leads us onward
in the triumph song of life. ©Larry van Dyke

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY: “Growing Things”

HYMN: Spring Song (Tune: “Puer Nobis” WOV 218)
In the garden, on the farms
Signs of life are showing.
Lambs and buds, the calves and trees
Praise the God of growing.

Kowhai gild the native bush,
Alpine meadows blossom.
Ferns unfold and mosses fruit.
Signs of God’s great kingdom.

Help us care much more, O Lord
For the unprotected,
For the young, the old, the poor,
All who are neglected.

Then God’s fragile plant will bloom
In our selfish nation.
People will respect the work,
Honour God’s creation. © Bill Wallace

Hallowed be your name, Lord most high –
O Lord, hear our prayer.

May your kingdom come here on earth;
May your will be done here on earth,
As it is in heaven so on earth –
O Lord, hear our prayer

Give us daily bread day by day,
And forgive our sins day by day,
As we too forgive day by day,
O Lord, hear our prayer.

Lead us in your way, make us strong;
When temptations come make us strong;
Save us all from sin, keep us strong –
O Lord, hear our prayer.

HYMN: Servant Song
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
Let me be as Christ to you;
Pray that I may have the grace to
Let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
And companions on the road;
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
In the night-time of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
Speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping;
When you laugh I’ll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow,
Till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony,
Born of all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you
Let me be as Christ to you;
Pray that I may have the grace to
Let you be my servant too. © Richard Gillard

Celebrating Spring 8 September 2013

WELCOME AND NOTICES

GATHERING:
We gather this morning in praise and thanksgiving.
Warming earth, late spring frosts, blossoming fruit trees,
kowhai in bloom, new green grass, young animals being born; paddocks under plough, disc and roller, sowing of crops;
and a sense of optimism and expectation as all things burst into life.
So much to look forward to.
God of new beginnings, you bless each day, making your love eternal spring. Fill our hearts that we may praise you,
the Lord of every season.

HYMN: Lord of the Changing Year (Tune: Little Cornard WOV 107)
Lord of the changing year,
patterns and colours bright;
all that we see and hear,
sunrise and starlit night:
the seasons, Lord, in splendour shine,
your never-failing wise design.

Lord of the winter scene,
hard-frozen ice and snow;
death where once life has been,
nothing is seen to grow;
few creatures roam, few birds will fly
across the clouded wintery sky.

Lord of unfolding spring,
promise of life to come;
nature begins to sing
where once her tongue was dumb;
the crocus blooms, the hedgerows wake,
and Advent day is soon to break.

Lord of the summer days,
spreading and green the trees;
song thrush lifts high your praise,
gulls light on deep-blue seas;
the warmth and welcome of the sun
brings happiness to everyone.

Lord of the autumn gold,
reaping and harvest home,
sheep safely in the fold,
turn of the year has come.
The seasons, Lord, in splendour shine,
your never-failing wise design. © David Mowbray (HFTC)

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Wayne Barton

SONG: (Tune: Old McDonald Had a Farm)
We are celebrating Spring t-o-d-a-y
Because we’re happy let’s all sing t-o-d-a-y
With a blossom here and a daffy there,
here a leaf there a bud, everywhere a new flower,
Let’s embrace then all new things t-o-d-a-y.

Lambs are jumping high with glee t-o-d-a-y
Enjoying life while young and free t-o-d-a-y
With a gambol here and a gambol there
here a bound there a bound, everywhere a fast run
Tails wiggling full of fun t-o-d-a-y.

Caterpillars on our greens m-u-n-c-h
They’re all part of God’s great schemes m-u-n-c-h
Don’t knock them off here or hose them off there
here no squish there no spray, everywhere let bugs stay
Please be kind when pests are found t-o-d-a-y.

Baby birds are everywhere n-e-s-t-s
We’ve got chickens in our hair n-e-s-t-s
With a cluck cluck here and a cheep cheep there
here a quack there a quack, everywhere a chirp chirp,
Feathered friends are in the air t-o-d-a-y.
There’s lots about all fresh and young t-o-d-a-y
We love it now that spring has sprung t-o-d-a-y
With a puppy here and a kitten there
here a calf there a foal, everywhere a new soul,
Thank you Lord for this display t-o-d-a-y. (With thanks to June Service)

REFLECTION 1

READING: Luke 12: 22-31 John McKean

HYMN: We Plough the Fields and Scatter (Remain seated)
We plough the fields, and scatter
the good seed on the land,
but it is fed and watered
by your almighty hand;
you send the snow in winter,
the warmth to swell the grain,
the breezes and the sunshine
and soft refreshing rain.
All good gifts around us
are sent from heaven above;
We thank you God, O thank you God,
for all your love.

You only are the Maker
of all things near and far;
you paint the wayside flower,
you light the evening star;
the winds and waves obey you,
by you the birds are fed;
much more to us, your children,
you give us daily bread. C/A

REFLECTION 2

THE OFFERING & PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Slides accompany the prayer

HYMN: Touch the Earth Lightly (Tune: Bunessan WOV 91)
Touch the earth lightly,
use the earth gently,
nourish the life of the world in our care:
gift of great wonder,
ours to surrender,
trust for the children tomorrow will bear.

We who endanger,
who create hunger,
agents of death for all creatures that live,
we who would foster
clouds of disaster,
God of our planet, forestall and forgive!

Let there be greening,
birth from the burning,
water that blesses and air that is sweet,
health in God’s garden,
hope in God’s children,
regeneration that peace will complete.

God of all living,
God of all loving,
God of the seedling, the snow and the sun,
teach us, deflect us,
Christ re-connect us,
using us gently and making us one. © Shirley Murray (AA)

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: In the Bulb There is a Flower
In the bulb there is a flower,
in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise:
butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
there’s a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

There’s a song in every silence,
seeking word and melody,
there’s a dawn in every darkness,
bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future
what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning,
in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing;
in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season,
Something God alone can see. © Hope Publishing (VU)

THE GATHERING: From the rear of the church
We gather on this first day of spring to give God thanks and praise.
God of life’s seasons, you are with us in the fickle weather of
spring, in the balmy warmth of summer, in the mellow
days of autumn and in the cold and damp of winter.
You are with us, God, in the enthusiasm of youth and in our reflective
mature years, in the rushed days of productive work and in the
slower pace of retirement.
You are with us, God, in the dark times of pain or disappointment
and in the joy of celebration.
You never leave us, God, and so we gather, a family of your people,
to worship you in Jesus’ name.

HYMN: Fill Your Hearts with Joy (Tune: WOV 84 Regent Square)
Fill your hearts with joy and gladness,
sing and praise your God and mine!
Great the Lord in love and wisdom,
might and majesty divine!
He who framed the starry heavens
knows and names them as they shine.

Praise the Lord, his people, praise him!
wounded souls his comfort know;
those who fear him find his mercies,
peace for pain and joy for woe;
humble hearts are high exalted,
human pride and power laid low.

Praise the Lord for times and season,
cloud and sunshine, wind and rain;
spring to melt the snows of winter
till the waters flow again;
grass upon the mountain pastures,
golden valleys thick with grain.

Fill your hearts with joy and gladness,
peace and plenty crown your days;
love his laws, declare his judgements,

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Hilary Moore

SONG: Pear and Apples, Wheat and Grapes (Tune: Monkland WOV 11ii)
Pear and apples, wheat and grapes Flashing shoals of silver fish,
many textures, many shapes; every colour you could wish;
greening leaves and blossom drifts, fishing boats, for you and me
thank you, God, for all your gifts. reap the harvest of the sea.

Earth and ocean, plant and beast, Loving Lord, we know you care;
altogether make the feast; let the world your goodness share;
all who long to share your grace save us from our selfish greed,
at your table have their place. finding you in those in need.

REFLECTION

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (together)
We believe in one God, Author of life, Creator of the universe.
We believe in the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who came into the world
to seek the lost and to redeem the whole creation.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, giver of life, who leads us to all truth; renewing us and enabling us to grow in the likeness of Christ.
We affirm that the Church and all its members have a mission for today; to proclaim Good News, and to work with those who struggle to see justice and freedom won for all in our communities.
We affirm the dignity of all people and the basic right of every person
to develop to their full potential. Our hope is in Jesus Christ, the bearer of Truth, whose purposes are fulfilled through God’s people. Amen.
THE OFFERING
God, we are a people of thanksgiving: a people who sing hymns of joy, who listen to your good news and celebrate your presence in our lives
and in our world. Bless these gifts of money and food, that they may be used according to your purposes. Bless, too, this bread and wine that we may be fed by your love and your Word, and go from this place renewed by your Spirit. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

INVITATION TO COMMUNION & THE PEACE

COMMUNION HYMN: For Your Generous Providing (Tune: Blaenwern)
For your generous providing
which sustain us all our days,
for your Spirit here residing,
we proclaim our heartfelt praise.
Through the depths of joy and sorrow;
though the road be smooth or rough,
fearless, we can face tomorrow
for your grace will be enough.

Round your table, through your giving,
show us how to live and pray
till your kingdom’s way of living
is the bread we share each day:
bread for us and for our neighbour,
bread for body, mind, and soul,
bread of heaven and human labour –
broken bread that makes us whole. © Church of Scotland Panel on Worship (CH4)

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
God be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks and praise. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
A new season reminds us … we sing this song of praise:
Holy, holy, holy God,
loving and giving creator,
blessed Saviour, eternal presence –
glory to you in the highest …..

THE LORD’S PRAYER

COMMUNION

PRAYER FOLLOWING COMMUNION

HYMN: Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
we are travellers on the road,
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear,
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you,
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love, and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you,
pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too. © Scripture in Song (CH4)

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN – OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX APPEAL.

Shoeboxes are available at coffee time after church. Shoebox Sunday is September 22nd so start collecting up your gifts now. All the boxes from New Zealand are distributed to disadvantaged children in the Pacific Islands and the South East Asia area.
See also on www.operationchristmaschild.org.nz

It is great fun looking for special items for your chosen age group – girl or boy and they can be for practical purposes or for play. They don’t need to be expensive either and Warehouse Stationery and the $2 shops are fun to explore.

Gift suggestions in the various categories are in the pamphlet with many options. Hair combs should be “robust” – fish-hooks are OK for a 10-14 boy and a sewing kit with blunt end scissors for a 10-14 girl. The children love to share and play together, so an inflatable ball and pump are good, tennis balls etc. They enjoy “fun” masks, spectacles, hats too.

Please do note the list of exclusions too, especially to remove all packaging as they don’t have the rubbish collection system we do. Any instructions can be tied to the object or held by a rubber band. Marbles can go into a draw string bag. Also, all items must be new and not include any which could spill or ooze [toothpaste]. It would be a pity if any of your items have to be discarded because they don’t comply.

If you don’t wish to fill a box but would like to join in, help a friend to do theirs. As each box costs $9 to be delivered, all donations will be gratefully received too.

Then bring your completed boxes, labelled and rubber banded, to church on 22nd September for their blessing and they’ll start their journey to an excited child. We sent 44 last year – let’s try and beat that this year. June.
